Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between family violence, school violence, violence tolerance, and dating violence perceived by college students. The study also aimed to understand more about the role of dating violence in the socialization of young adults in order to improve marital relationships and prevent family violence.
Methods: The researchers gave a structured questionnaire to 322 enrolled college students from five colleges in Chonbuk.
Results: First, in comparing each factor by general characteristics, dating violence showed significant differences in age, religion, age of partner, association period, and job of partner. Indirect experience of family violence showed significant differences between the fathers¡¯ and mothers¡¯ academic backgrounds. Experience of school violence and violence tolerance showed significant differences between genders. Second, there was a static correlation between direct or indirect experience of family violence and the experience of the victim or the injurer of dating violence. There was also a static correlation between violence tolerance and the experience of the victim or injurer of dating violence. Another static correlation appeared between the experience of violence in childhood and violence tolerance. Third, in analyzing the influence of dating violence factors, it was found that the victims¡¯ experiences of dating violence were primarily affected by their experience of school violence. Fourth, violence acceptability showed mediating effects between the direct experience of family violence and dating violence, as well as between school violence and dating violence.
Conclusions: It is important to reduce the long-term effects of dating violence. Education can help maintain healthy family relationships and prevent family violence.
